Mini split vs. central AC: which is right for your home?

Central AC makes sense when you have healthy ducts and want one system for the whole house. Ductless wins on efficiency, room-by-room control, and any home without good ductwork. Here's the honest head-to-head.

The core difference

Central AC cools your whole house to one temperature and pushes that air through ducts. A ductless mini split conditions each room independently with no ducts at all. Everything else — cost, efficiency, comfort — flows from that one design choice.

Head to head

Neither is universally 'better' — they're built for different homes. The table below is the honest version we walk customers through.

When central AC is the right call

  • Your home already has healthy, well-sealed ductwork.
  • You're fine with one temperature for the whole house.
  • You're replacing an existing central system that's served you well.

If that's you, replacing a central system is often the simpler path — and we'll say so.

When ductless wins

  • There's no ductwork, or the ducts are old and leaky (duct loss runs 25–30%).
  • You have hot/cold rooms central air can't balance.
  • You want lower bills and the ability to condition only the rooms you use.
  • You're adding a space — addition, garage, casita — where extending ducts is impractical.

The decision in one line

Good ducts + whole-house simplicity → central. No ducts, problem rooms, or efficiency goals → ductless. Many San Antonio homes are a hybrid: keep the central system and add a zone or two where it falls short. We'll tell you honestly which camp you're in.

Ductless mini split vs. central AC — at a glance
FactorDuctless mini splitCentral AC
Ductwork None required (3-inch hole) Requires sealed duct network
Efficiency SEER2 20+, no duct losses Often 14–16 SEER2, 25–30% duct loss
Zoning Room-by-room thermostats One thermostat for the house
Install disruption Minimal, often same-day (single-zone) Major if adding ducts
Best for Hot rooms, no-duct homes, additions Homes with healthy existing ducts
Humidity control Excellent (long low-speed runtime) Good when sized right

Frequently asked questions

Is a mini split cheaper than central AC?

For a single room, a mini split is usually cheaper than installing or extending central AC. For a whole house, a multi-zone ductless system can be comparable to or more than central — but it returns more in efficiency and zoned comfort. We price both honestly on the estimate.

Can I mix central AC and a mini split?

Absolutely — it's one of the most common setups we install. Keep your central system for the main house and add a ductless zone for the room it can't keep up with. You get the best of both without ripping anything out.
